Bathroom Remodel

We are at it again. It was only December 2010 when we remodeled our master bathroom due to a water damaged rotted shower wall. Initially we were just did the shower but then the bathroom looked odd - half old, half new. So, since we had a high flow toilet and the large vanity only had one sink, we went ahead and replaced those and the flooring. This year is similar story but in the guest bathroom - some water & termite damage around this stained glass window, rotten vanity that was falling apart, and high flow toilet.

You can see the tile surrounding the tub/shower has been removed as well as the tile flooring (some of those were loose too) the toilet, and the rotten vanity. This was early demolition. I didn't get any tub out photos.

New tub in (Jerry's Christmas present was a jetted tub) and the first day of tiling the tub/shower area. The tiles are travertine. We used that in the other bathroom and were very happy with it. The board is where the trim tiles will go - they are slate.

The floor is ceramic tile in planks instead of squares. Mom & Jerry not fond of them but when the room is finished I believe they will like them. This is the day they were set but not grouted.

The vanity, below, is not actually installed yet. I just set it in place so the countertop guy could crate a template.

I cropped this photo so you could only see new stuff which gives an indication of how it will look. Still have lots of work - walls, lights, vanity & countertop, toilet, etc. but it is moving right along. Stay tuned!

We started with a bulging shower wall due to water and termite damage (old termite damage, not active thank goodness) and it evolved into a make-over because the new shower didn't match the rest of the bathroom which would be a big problem if we ever wanted to sell our house. This gave us a chance to install a new low-flow toilet that is higher (more accessible), and to replace flourescent lights with energy saving bulbs. Then I splurged a little on the granite counter top. OK, I splurged a lot but I saved in other areas to make up for it :) Oh, and double sinks for the first time in our married life!

Between a sinus infection, bronchitis, and a bathroom remodel, I havn't done much posting. I am happy to finally report that the project is so very close to being finished! Yesterday the granite counter was installed.

The faucets are not hooked up yet - I just put one up there to see how it would look. The contractor is supposed to finish up tomorrow by installing the faucets, hooking up the toilet, adjusting the shower to allow hotter water, and three pieces of trim. I still haven't found a mirror or mirrors that I like and that will fit the space. We may have to install that ourself because the contractor is planning on finishing up tomorrow.

When it's all finished I will do some staging and then show some before and after shots.

We Have Tile!

It will be Monday before the tile work is finished because something has to sit for 48 hours. I am liking the travertine. I think Jerry would have preferred a material with a more consistent look but I like the variety of design and color found in using a natural resource.

I'm thinking this vanity from Lowe's. If I go with this off-the-rack vanity, I should have money in the budget for a granite top. (My thought is custom granite with stock cabinet would look better than custom cabinet with stock counter.)

The shower doors have become a chore. I haven't found any I like but I have found a couple that "will do". So far nothing I like in the home centers for towel racks, etc. Oh! I did find some pretty paint chips. Guess I am getting ahead of myself because only the shower is happening now. The rest comes after Thanksgiving.

Bathroom Work

Our shower wall was bowed out and spongy (you could press on the tile and actually push it in) under the window. You can kinda see it in this photo if you follow the corner of the window straight down - it kinda appears darker in the photo. Anyway, now the outside of the house is showing some distress too so it was time to bring in a contractor.

Of course that means gating the dogs while they work, lol.

We were expecting just water damage from where the tile had cracked and from the window ledge not having a pitch but we found much more - termite damage! Luckily there were no active termites and the damage was old. The previous owner had "fixed" the termite problem but didn't fix the damage apparently. The studs below the window just turned to dust which is causing the buckling of stucco on the outside which in turn lets in more water. amaizing how damaging water can be.

So yesterday they tore out the tile, put in more 2 by somethings, and used some really nasty smelling glue to piece the shower bottom thingy.

Today, they added the backerboard for new tiles and partially added new shower fixtures (the rest goes on after the tile guy does his part tomorrow.)

What I didn't know when I was taking this photo was that the floor was cement.

Luckily the contractor who had to turn around and come right back has a rat terrier and a jack russell of his own so he understood,.
