Declan 2007-2017

We visited a neurologist in Tampa yesterday to learn that the best treatment for Declan was humane euthanasia. After caring for him and watching him decline so rapidly the last few days, and the suffering he endured,  our choice was obvious yet no less painful.

When you foster dogs you do expect to lose them. You expect to give them up. But those losses are happy losses as they go to a new family that will love them even more than you did. Losing them in this way was not even a consideration for me.

Declan came to us when he was about 6 having been born into rescue (Ratbone Rescues). His mama was a pregnant rescue. He spent his first six years in the home of his special person- a man who died 5  years after his adoption. The wife struggled to keep him but ultimately her work scheduled won and he became my foster in March 2013 and was adopted again in December 2013. He came back to us in Dec 2016 and within a couple weeks was in the vet. Two very expensive bouts of treatment, emergency room visits, test, surgeries, and treatment found nothing specific but labeled acute gastroenteritis (which I now believe was probably a secondary issue caused by pain).

Yesterday we saw a neurologist who narrowed down to only two possibilities - neither with good outcomes even with extensive treatment. The possibility of a normal life where he could walk, raise a leg to pee, or go through a dog door were none. More important, he would continue to degrade and need constant pain management. We had to let him go. We stopped on the way home to our vet for him to enjoy a lunch of Wendy's chicken nuggets.

Our vet was wonderful. She said a little prayer stating that he had made his way back to his true family to be with us during this time in his life. He fell asleep in my arms, much as he had many other nights, and drifted away peacefully.

Home Show and Tricky Dogs Show

Jerry and I went to the Home Show at Tropicana Field on Saturday morning. I went because the Tricky Dogs Show was performing at 11am and there are two Ratbone alumni in the show ;)

Here he is arriving for the show and getting the dogs to their spots on stage.

He had three ratties, a poodle, a jack, and a corgi mix. Two of the ratties were Ratbone dogs and he spoke of the virtues of adopting homeless dogs during the act. He also talked about some fire safety techniques for the kiddos.

A palm tree and sun made of balloons as the entry decorations similar to the last time we went to the home show and it was a wreath and toy soldiers (near the holidays).

Arkansas, Part 2

First, the rental car we drove around and I got stuck in the mud in the Manning Cemetery. Anyone else think it is hard to drive a "strange" car? I had the thing two days before I figured out it had a sun roof! And I won't even share how long I stood out in the cold and snow trying to figure out how to put gas in thing! Seriously though the car (a C300) had some nice features but I would suggest they rethink the cruise control and signal placement - because the signal thing was hidden behind the steering wheel, I kept pushing the cruise up or down causing the car to speed up at times when what I really wanted was to slow down and make a turn.

These photos are of Merriell in Mountain Home, Arkansas. We went to visit a friend of my mom's and this dog is her neighbor dog but she lives about half her time at her house. I was told she is a Jack Russell but I know a Rat Terrier when I see one ;)

And this evil chihuahua is Peanut. In a fight with my old girl Chloe, my money would be on this one! She belongs to my cousin Vickie in West Memphis. I just assumed that the dog of a groomer would be well behaved but this dog is vicious and obnoxious! Now I know how other people felt when they came to my house and Chloe stalked and nipped at them. I must point out, however, that Chloe was never this, er, round :)

Sleepy Saturday

There is much that I wanted to do today but I am pooped. I would take a nap but I don't want to miss my radio show "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" on NPR at 11:00. I miss it far too often because I seem to be busy at 11am on a typical Saturday ;) The reason I am so tired - a midnight possom "event".

I didn't have an opportunity to take photos to share but here is what happened:
  • Awakened about midnight by Daisey's alarm bark which goes something like this: woo woo woo woo woo
  • As I made my way to the glass door to see into the backyard, I could hear much commotion in the foliage, turned on the outside light, and saw something on the patio with the rat terriers jumping around and at it
  • Went flying out in fear that it was a possom and it might bite them
  • The animal ran back into the foliage followed by two rat terriers
  • Eddie brings it back out and Daisey stops it from running away as Eddie noses or bites it
  • Grabbed flashlight and saw that it was a possom, now playing dead, but it had some serious gashes on it
  • We finally got the dogs in the house
  • Looked out a few mintues later and it was gone somewhere
  • Went back to bed with the dog door closed
  • Eddie sits on end of bed on alert while Daisey paces back and forth between dog door and bedroom
  • Fall asleep but many, many times during the night hear the rats at the dog door trying to get out and they jumped on and off the bed all night long
  • Ratties are napping and I am tired this morning but need to get things done today

Biene's Bones

Doesn't looking at that broken bone just give you chills? This poor little rat terrier was adopted from the SPCA by someone I know from a social networking site (Rat-Terrier.com). She somehow escaped from the facility and was hit by a car. They put a cast on her leg and the adoptee was told she had a minor fracture. Ah, wrong.

Here's a photo of her shortly after adoption and before being diagnosed as having a serious break requiring pins and plates. The adoptee is a college student, with some family support, who was devistated to learn the correct surgery would near $3,000; however, she was bonded and knew if she took the dog back she would be destroyed. So she up a blog at Biene's Bones to try to raise money toward her surgery and report on her progress.

Even though she couldn't afford the expensive surgery, she went ahead and did it for the sake of the dog. Once healed Biene should be able to run and play like a normal rat terrier puppy!

If anyone reading this can afford and is it interested in donating ANTHING toward the surgery, please go to the site Biene's Bones (another blogspot account) where there are instructions for two types of donations. Either a paypal directly to the owner or new instructions on how to pay the vet directly.
So far she has raised $469!! There is a toteboard on the site to help keep track of the donations raised. I'm putting my money where my mouth is and going there now.

My Eddie

My normally photogentic Eddie just wasn't having any of it last night! My camera was low on charge and once I plugged it in he was striking pose after pose.....evil rat terrier! LOL

Yes, those are still the SAME paint samples on the wall. I don't even see them anymore untilt they show up in a photo ;)

Secret Santa Photos

Thought I would share photos of Minnie & Sadie in California wearing the items I sewed for them from the Secret Santa swap on Rat-Terrier.com. Minnie is a rat terrier, with a tail ,and Sadie is a rattie-corgi mix. Both are adorable! It still bothers me that it took two weeks to get my package to California but less tha a week to Ne WYork and only a couple days to Wisconsin. What's wrong with California???? And how is it that Wisconsin gets such excellent service?

Rattie Christmas

Despite spending much of Christmas day at the emergency vet, we did find time to fit in the Christmas traditions of cooking, eating, and openings gifts with family.
Eddie's wish came true - he got a little girl for Christmas!

It's a good thing I only have two rat terriers or little Sarah would not have enough arms!

Eddie helps her unwrap her presents

My ratties love my cousin Erica

Daisey thinks these toys with no stuffing are strange!

Ed enjoying his bulley stick

The Christmas feast of prime rib, asparagus, oven roasted potatoes and candied sweet potatoes . Next Christmas is going to seem like a long time away for the next feast!

A Christmas No-No!

Found It!

I found the thing that plugs into the thing on my digital camera and then into the USB on my laptop. I have photos again - Yippee!

It's been getting cold on and off here in Florida and I ended up getting sweaters for my fur family. Here's Eddie both modeling a sweater that looks really good on him and acting as though he is not the person responsible for the destuffing of yet another toy (notice the fiber fill on floor and sofa).

Daisey's is a velour hoodie. Jerry took it off of her and set it on the piano. Later she was pacing around the piano & looking up. I picked it up and she jumped on the chaise lounge and danced around. I came near here with it and she extended her neck and closed her eyes. She likes to get dressed - she is a material girl!

Chloe the chi looks quite cute in her $2.50 sweater from the bargain bins at Target.

Mom's Back

Mom is back from her vacation in Seattle. Instead of going out for Friday Girls Night Out, I made a stew in the crockpot and she made corn muffins. Yummy. She took me up on my invitation to spend the night and we purchased a movie on demand called "The Other Bolin Girl" with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansen. Very well made and acted movie. It was a 2 hour movie but it seemed so short. Guess that means we liked it. We didn't get to see Ntalie Portman headless though. LOL

I'm settling in for the night with my book, coke, and laptop in bed, LOL. Should be my first good night of sleep since Jerry left for Virginia last Sunday. I'm tired from sleep deprevation and a long week at work even if it was only 4 days. Just don't sleep well without Jerr but having Mom here will help. The dogs are settled down too and not acting as though the boogie man is in the living room. It's been so windy that even the bathroom vent was making strange noises that a rat terrier could not ignore.

Big yawn.......I feel a great night's rest on the way........good night bloggers :)

Friday Evening Walkie

I couldn't sleep this morning, got up before 6am, and watched the movie "Cool Runnings" again. I forgot just how much I like that film! What a great way to start the day. If you haven't seen it , you should. I view it is an inspiraitonal film. And, with the Olympics in progress, it is very timely (although the wrong season, LOL).
Just say the word "walkie" and you have the complete attention of my two rat terriers! Yesterday evening, as we were waiting for Jerry to come home, I went against my Podiastrist's advice and took the ratties for a walk around the neighborhood.
Eddie looked so sad and bored in the house and I know he LOVES to walk. Both of us have gained a couple extra pounds since our walks stopped due to foot problems.
Here's Miss Daisey looking around enjoying a change of scenery while we walked. I have to say it was a challange holding on to two leashes, two poop bags (one used, one ready) and a digital camera. I left the cell phone and house keys behind on this walk.
Jerry got home just as we were finishing up. They were so excited they were sprinting to the car and leaping in the air - I could barely get a shot with them in the frame because they were so excited.

Jerry and I then went to Momma Fu's for Mongolian Beef and brown rice. Yummy!
